Vote for me to be the Face of Halloween by clicking the link here: https://faceofhalloween.org/2025/john-fischer
Hi everyone,
This blog entry is going to be a little different than usual, as it revoles around a charity contest I am competing in to help raise awareness and funds for a “fang-tastic” good cause (😂I know, bad pun, but I couldn’t resist. Here come the “boos” 😂 – okay, I promise that was the last one).
In all seriousness, the contest is for a worthy cause, the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which provides resources like clothes and toys for seriously ill children in hospital. The way it works is that competitors post scary images of themselves and the public votes on which images they think are the scariest. Every person gets a free vote they can cast 24 hours, so you can vote every day for who you think is the scariest looking until October 30.
Where the donation part comes in is if you want to cast more votes for a competitor, you can make a donation of $10 or more to the Children’s Starlight Foundation. $10 equals 10 votes, $15 equals 15 votes, you get the idea.
I would be remiss if I didn’t say there was prize in it for the winner. Whoever “reaps” the competition (okay, I’ll stop…maybe 😏) wins $13,000. They also have a chance to meet the host of the contest, actress Jamie Lee Curtis (who played Laurie Strode, the sister of Michael Meyers, in the all-time horror classic, Halloween), as well as Matthew Lillard (Stu from Scream and the villian in Five Nights at Freddy’s) and Kane Hoddard (Jason Voorhese in Friday the 13th). Lastly, they get a spread in Rue Morgue Magazine, a publication all about horror fiction.
Some of you may know that my day job is as a healthcare reporter, and I have covered many stories about care and treatment for children in hospital. I am also a die-heart (that pun was not intended, I swear) Halloween fanatic.
For me, Halloween is more than just a fun opportunity to dress up, eat candy and have fun with my ghouls (🤣somebody get me a strait jacket, muhahahahaha 😈…okay, I’m done now, seriously this time). It’s an opportunity to explore history and culture. My mother was from Ireland, the birthplace of Halloween (originally called Samhain). For me, it’s an opportunity to connect with my Celtic ancestry and also learn about how superstition came about and how it still influences society today (for instance, did you know that buildings in America do not have 13th floors because it’s considered bad luck).
It’s an opportunity for me to connect with my mother, who sadly passed away in 2023 from early-onset Alzheimer’s. As a result, I have decided that if I do win, I will donate a portion of my winnings to a charity for Alzheimer’s and another to a charity for Autism, another cause close to my heart. So voting for me is a vote for three charities, not just one.
This cause is for the children and warms my cold, undead heart (sorry, I lied. I know, I’m out of control) by combining my passion for healthcare and my love for All Hallows’ Eve.
So, please click the link here or above to cast your vote for me. The picture of this blog is my profile photo, and there are many others you can check out in my profile. You can cast your vote every 24 hours, but even if it’s just once, that would be great. And if you can, please donate. No worries if you can’t though. I know that money is tight for a lot of people in this economic climate of inflation. At the very least, I hope this has made you aware of a worthwhile cause.
Thank you and a Happy early Halloween to all of you. I will be back with more spooky content soon. Cross my heart and hope to die…whoops, I did it again. 🎃👻
